About SERC
Since 1913, amateur radio operators -- hams -- have been volunteering their time, service and equipment in the public interest, providing reliable communications in disaster-stricken areas until normal communications are restored.
The Sarasota Emergency Radio Club, SERC, was formed in early 1976, as the licensee for the Sarasota County Civil Defense RACES station. The FCC originally assigned the WB4NJV call sign to the club. This call was changed to N4SER in early 2004.
At about the same time the club was formed, work began on building Sarasota County's first 2 Meter repeater. At that time, there were no repeaters between Bradenton and Ft. Myers. On September 27, 1976, the club's new repeater, WR4AUP, went on the air.
The club is an American Radio Relay League Special Service Club, primarily dedicated to providing emergency communications in time of disaster. We work closely with Sarasota County Emergency Services, Sarasota County Red Cross, Sarasota County ACS, and the Division of Forestry. Club members also participate in local public service events.
